Questions patients commonly ask before treatment.
These answers are general education. Your clinician will provide recommendations specific to your medical history and treatment plan.
Is ketamine FDA-approved for depression or chronic pain?
Ketamine is FDA-approved as an anesthetic. IV ketamine used for many psychiatric and chronic pain indications is off-label. Off-label prescribing is a common part of medicine when supported by clinical judgment, but it requires appropriate informed consent.
Will I need a ride home?
Yes. Patients should not drive themselves home after ketamine treatment and should follow the clinic's post-treatment restrictions.
How many treatments will I need?
There is no single schedule appropriate for every patient. The number and frequency of treatments depend on the indication, clinical response, tolerability, and treating clinician's plan.
Does ketamine work for everyone?
No. Some patients improve, some experience partial benefit, and others may not respond. Screening is important because ketamine also has risks and contraindications.
Can I stop my other medications?
Do not stop or change prescribed medications unless your treating clinician instructs you to do so. Medication changes may need coordination with your psychiatrist, primary-care clinician, or other prescriber.
